AbstractCruise ADR0208 was carried out on board R/V Urania under the frame of the ADRICOSM-STAR and MED-POL projects in the Montenegro and Albanian coastal and marginal zones, inclusive of Kotor Bay (Boka Kotorska), in the southwestern Adriatic Sea. The cruise was planned to acquire hydrological (CTD vertical profiles, Rosette water samples, bio-optical measurements) and bio-geochemical data and hyperspectral radiation profiles of the water column for the development of an integrated coastal area and river and urban waters management system. In addition, the survey allowed the kick start of seafloor mapping of the unexplored Montenegro and Albania shelf areas using a multibeam system and sub-bottom sonar profiles. Grab samples were also collected during the cruise. The full report of the cruise, along with detail of the ship tracks for all the different data types, is available at: http://www.ismar.cnr.it/prodotti/reports-campagne/2000-2009. R/V Urania was equipped with a DGPS positioning system (satellite link by FUGRO) and the vessel was set-up for multibeam data acquisition and navigation with PDS-2000 software by Teledyne Marine RESON. Bathymetric data were acquired with a 50 kHz, 126 0.5°, 150° aperture Reson Seabat 8160 (5000 m range) multibeam system (MBES). The sonar head was positioned on the ship’s keel using a V-shaped steel frame. A Sound Velocity probe at the Sonar Head was interfaced directly to the MBES processor, thus providing the necessary real-time data for the beam-forming. CTD casts were used for input of the sound velocity pro?le to the system.
