AbstractThe SPIN-Gela 2024 cruise was carried out on board the Gaia Blu vessel owned by CNR (National Research Council of Italy) between 7 and 14 September 2024 (ports Catania-Catania), in the Strait of Sicily, although initially scheduled between 6 and 17 September, due to severe bad weather conditions, it ended earlier than expected. During the mere 48 hours of favorable weather, 501 km2 of multibeam data were acquired with a Kongsberg EM712 1°x0.5° system, in a water depth between -120 and -700 m mostly along the shelf edge of the study area, for the mapping of the headwall area of a submarine landslide potentially capable, in the past, to trigger tsunami waves. Seapath 380 was used for positing and MRU corrections. DGPS correction was sent over the EMSAT and IOSAT L band beams with a FUGRO Marinestar annual subscription. Few sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Valeport MIDAS SVP. SIS 5 was used to collect multibeam data which were processed with the QPS software Qimera. The data acquisition was confined to the upper slope located east of the Cassiopea Argo platforms, before the weather stand by. The survey of the area was in fact further complicated by the start of production on 19 August 2024, by Eni S.p.A. in joint venture with the partner Energean, of the Argo Cassiopea gas field. This required a safety distance of 2 nautical miles from both the Cassiopea platform operated by the oil drilling vessel Saipem 10000 and the Saipem 3000 units. The SPIN-Gela24 campaign took place within the third technical-scientific collaboration agreement between the Institute of Marine Sciences (ISMAR) of the CNR and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security, Department of Energy, General Directorate of Energy Sources and Qualification Titles. This type of agreement aims to implement environmental safety of offshore hydrocarbon extraction and production activities. Specifically, the SPIN project (test of good practices for the Study of the Potential INteration between offshore activities and natural hazards) has had the aim of carrying out a test of the good practices through the practical application to two case studies located in the northern Adriatic (offshore Pesaro) and off southern Sicily (offshore Licata-Gela), where the SPIN-Gela24 campaign took place.
