| Abstract | Honey Comb ridge at the Hikurangi continental margin is a prominent location where signs of free gas in the hydrate stability zone are observed in multichannel reflection seismic data sets. Aim of the cruise TAN2304 - HYDEE OBS is to serve for a more detailed investigation of this phenomenon by adding new physical parameters to the existing data base. For this purpose converted shear waves were recorded by four component ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) across this structure. Adding information on lateral and depth distribution of shear modulus in sediments will enable to test for a possible co-existence of gas and hydrate. Further these data will help to investigate the mechanism of gas migration into the hydrate stability zone and the related formation of concentrated hydrate deposits. To achieve these goals the OBS deployment needed to be tailored for the analyses of the reduced sound velocity of shear waves. Therefore, the OBS were deployed at a distance of 100 m only. Deployment of the OBS was done with the deep-sea cable of R/V TANGAROA. Each OBS was lowered to about 30 m above seafloor, while the position at depth was monitored with the HIPAP USBL system of the vessel. Dynamic positioning enabled to deploy the instruments within +/- 5 m of the desired location. |
