AbstractSome monitoring cruises carried out in the coastal area of Veneto Region to implement the European Directive "Marine Strategy on board the R/V Litus. The European Parliament with the Directive 2008/56/EC (Marine Strategy Framework Directive-MSFD) established a framework for Community action in the field of marine environmental policy. This MSFD considers the marine environment like a precious heritage that must be protected, preserved and, where possible, restored with the aim of maintaining biodiversity and preserving viability of seas and oceans. To reach these aims, MSFD requires Member States to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) of marine waters in 2020, by implementing an ecosystem approach of marine management. These morpho-bathymetric data were acquired as propaedeutic data to assess the seabed habitats in different areas subject to physical damage: Multi bean data was collected by the Kongsberg EM2040 Dual Compact and interfacing with the Seapath 300 and Kornberg Seatex Motion Sensor Unit (MRU) 5: The Multi beam was mounted on a pole located at the bow of the vessel. A Sound Velocity probe at the keel 1 m above the Sonar Head was interfaced directly to the MBES processor, thus providing the necessary real-time data for the beam-forming. CTD casts were normally used for input of the sound velocity pro?le to the system. The Multi Beam and backscatter data was processed with Caris HIPS and SIPS 10 and the small are of Multi beam bathymetry coverage is identified by the polygon provided as GML object.
