| Abstract | A geophysical study of Vema fracture zone, Equatorial Atlantic conducted in cooperation with the Geological Institute of Moscow (GIN) . Field work has been carried out with R/V Strakhov operated by GIN, Russian Academy of Science. We carried out multibeam bathymetry, magnetics and multichannel seismic togheter with a systematic sampling of walls of the Vema transverse ridge. Bathymetry data were acquired with a Hollming Echos 625 (12KHz) multibeam echosounder (15 beams, 90°,i.e., coverage up to 2/3 water depth). The data were processed using the Simrad Software package NEPTUNE. High resolution seismic reflection profiles were acquired, for a total length of over 1200 km with equipment of ISMAR, Bologna. An array of 2 SERCEL G.I. guns has been employed as a sound source, operating in harmonic mode configuration, with a capacity of 210 cubic inches for the generators and the same for the injectors, at a working pressure of 2000 psi. The receiving streamer employed 48 channels (each with 10 hydrophones) spaced 12.5 m apart. Shot interval was 50 m, allowing six fold coverage. Seismic source and nearest channel were spaced 100 m apart. Digital acquisition was performed with a Geometrics Stratavisor adopting a sampling rate of 1 msec and record length of 12 sec. Seismic data have been processed at the Institute of Marine Geology of the C.N.R. of Bologna using an industry-standard package (DISCO) made by CogniSeis. Magnetics was acquired by a GEM-19MD "Overhouser effect" magnetometer deployed from the stern with an offset from GPS antenna of 240 m. The data were collected with a sampling rate of 10 sec by the same computer controlling the navigation --- Results are published in: Fabretti et al.
