| Abstract | In June 2000 the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) awarded a contract to Global Ocean Technologies Limited (GOTECH) to undertake the Irish National Seabed Survey, Zone 3 Hydrographic Survey. This area, approx. 413,760 sq. km, stretches from 200m depth on the Western Seaboard of Ireland, westward into the full oceanic depths of the Atlantic Ocean. The primary aim of the survey was to gather swathe bathymetry data over the whole area. Gravity, magnetometer, high-resolution profiler and velocity of sound data were also gathered. In addition, ten, 50km long extension lines into the Petroleum Affairs Department data set (1996) were collected to confirm the tie in between the two data sets. Two vessels were used the RSV Bligh and the RSV Siren. The Bligh was fitted with a Kongsberg Simrad combined EM120 EM1002 multibeam echo sounder capable of measuring to full oceanic depths. The Siren is fitted with a Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 multibeam echo sounder with a maximum depth capability of 1000m. The Bligh was assigned to survey areas deeper than 500m with the Siren filling in the shallower areas. The Bligh sailed from Waterford on the 23rd July 2000 and after equipment tests and calibrations proceeded to the western extremities of the survey area to commence the survey. The Siren commenced work one month later in the Porcupine Bank area. The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to the International Hydrographic Organisation’s SP44 (fourth edition 1997) Order 3 standards. Differentially corrected GPS positioning. Fugro Seastar Service. The overall accuracy achieved using this service was better than plus/minus 5 metres and generally better than plus/minus 2.5 metres. Sound velocity-profilers - AML STD 12 plus & Valeport 650 SVP. Due to the size of the Zone 3 area the survey was split into eight areas named 3A to 3H. These areas were loosely based on the general seabed topography. Each area was treated as a separate survey. Zone 3B. This is the largest of the survey area in Zone 3 at 176,843 sq. km. The seabed in the area is dominated by a bathymetric feature the Rockall Trough, which is aligned NE to SW and slopes gently from 2350m water depth in the NE to 3550m water depth in the SW. The trough is bounded to the NW by the Rockall Bank, which rises steeply to 500m water depth and to the SE by the Porcupine Bank, which rises steeply to 400m water depth. Submarine canyons whose axes are up to 250m below the surrounding seabed cut the Porcupine Bank slope. No tidal reductions were applied to the bathymetric data as no tide gauges were deployed and no suitable tidal models appear to be available for this area. It was considered that what tide there was in the area had an insignificant effect on the overall total error budget for depths in the area. Due to the very long survey lines some difficulty was experienced during processing with the velocity profiles. This was overcome by spacing the velocity stations as regularly as practical over the area. Two 50 km long lines were run off the southern border of this area to facilitate comparison with the Petroleum Affairs Division (1996) data. A good match between the data sets was observed. The area was mapped by the RSV BLIGH between 28/04/01 and 14/05/02. In 2010 the data was reprocessed using the hydrographic software CARIS Hips & Sips. Particular attention was given to the removal of data related to erroneous soundings, vessel motion, navigation jumps and sound velocity refraction artefacts. Calibration offsets were also assessed and modified and line-to line mismatches were aligned when required. When data were of acceptable quality and only showing minor artefacts common in multibeam data (Hughes Clarke, 2003), they were gridded at 30m cell size into seven tiles.
