AbstractIn June 2000 the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) awarded a contract to Global Ocean Technologies Limited (GOTECH) to undertake the Irish National Seabed Survey, Zone 3 Hydrographic Survey. This area, of some 413,760 sq km, stretches from the 200m line on the Western Seaboard of Ireland, westward into the full oceanic depths of the Atlantic Ocean. The primary aim of the survey was to gather swathe bathymetry data over the whole area. Additionally gravity, magnetometer, high-resolution profiler and velocity of sound data were gathered. Also gathered were ten, 50km long extension lines into the Petroleum Affairs Department data set (1996) to confirm the tie in between the two data sets. Two vessels were used the RSV Bligh and the RSV Siren. The Bligh was fitted with a Kongsberg Simrad combined EM120 EM1002 multibeam echo sounder capable of measuring to full oceanic depths. The Siren is fitted with a Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 multibeam echo sounder with a maximum depth capability of 1000m. The Bligh was assigned to survey areas deeper than 500m with the Siren filling in the shallower areas. The Bligh commenced operations on the 23rd July 2000. The Siren commenced work one month later in the Porcupine Bank area. The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to the International Hydrographic Organisation’s SP44 (fourth edition 1997) standard. GOTECH submit that the survey has fulfilled the Order 3 requirements. Differentially corrected GPS positioning. Fugro Seastar Service. The overall accuracy achieved using this service was better than plus/minus 5 metres and generally better than plus/minus 2.5 metres. Sound velocity-profilers - AML STD 12 plus & Valeport 650 SVP. Due to the size of the Zone 3 area the survey was split into eight areas named 3A to 3H. These areas were loosely based on the general seabed topography. Each area was treated as a separate survey. No tidal reductions were applied to the bathymetric data in most zones as no tide gauges were deployed and no suitable tidal models appear to be available for this area. It was considered that what tide there was in the area had an insignificant effect on the overall total error budget for depths in the area. Depths in zones 3G and 3H were corrected for tides to the Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT) datum. Tidal elevations were computed using the POLPRED software developed by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory. The model used was the North East Atlantic model. The area was mapped by the RSV BLIGH and RSV SIREN between 23/07/00 and 06/06/2002. The data was regridded in 2007 using the entire multibeam soundings available. This dataset was generated by Boris Dorschel for the book. Atlas of the Deep-Water Seabed (2010). ISBN: 978-90-481-9375-2 (Print) 978-90-481-9376-9 (Online). The entire zone 3 area was split into thirty tiles. The multibeam echo sounder data was processed utilising CARIS HIPS and SIPS multibeam processing software. The results were exported as an xyz file in WGS84 projection. The xyz files were gridded in Fledermaus. Gridding Type: Weighted Moving Average Weight Diameter: 3.Cell Size: 0.000225 Degrees. Interpolation was carried out on the dtm. Interpolate surface (3pts; 5 Iterations). Please Note: The grids are created using the entire multibeam soundings available and interpolation has been used to fill the gaps, in particular in areas deeper than 2000 m. The density of the multibeam data points is sufficient to model full coverage DTMs of 25 m resolution down to a water depth of approximately 2000 m (depending on morphology and slope angel). Below 2000m water depth, an increase in artefacts is observed. Visit http://www.infomar.ie/ for more information. Download all of our data and reports from https://jetstream.gsi.ie/iwdds/map.jsp
