| Abstract | From 1974 onwards, Secchi disk depths have been determined at high tide from the NIOZ sampling jetty (53°00'06'' N 4°47'21'' E), located in the Marsdiep tidal inlet between the North Sea and the Wadden Sea. Measurement frequency was 40–60 times per year, varying from once or twice a month in winter up to twice a week during phytoplankton spring blooms. The Secchi-disk depth (m) is the depth at which a lowered white disk just disappears from the observer's sight. This procedure was repeated two to three times, to have less influence of waves and make an eyeball estimate within an accuracy of 5 cm. Hereafter, the Secchi readings were corrected for varying environmental conditions (solar zenith angle, solar irradiance and sea surface conditions) at the time of observation. Subsequently, the corrected Secchi disk readings were converted to a turbidity proxy (/m) that measures the attenuation of light due to suspended and dissolved materials in the water column.Reference: Philippart CJM, MS Salama, JC Kromkamp, HJ van der Woerd, AF Zuur and GC Cade´e (2013) Four decades of variability in turbidity in the we tern Wadden Sea as derived from corrected Secchi disk readings.
