AbstractMeshAtlantic is the follow on project from MESH (Mapping European Seabed Habitats). The project aim is to promote harmonised production and use of marine habitat maps covering the Atlantic Area. The key outputs of the project are a set of homogeneous Eunis nature classification maps covering a limited set of Natura 2000 sites and a broad scaled modelled map utilising an assemblage of readily available data layers. Kenmare Bay, a Natura 2000 site was selected as the Irish survey area for MeshAtlantic. It is also an area designated for monitoring under the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The Marine Institute vessel, the R.V. Celtic Voyager was used as the survey platform. The scientific objectives of the Kenmare Bay survey are to: 1.Acquire geophysical, biological samples, particle size samples and oceanographic datasets to use in the creation of a Kenmare Bay Habitat Map. 2.Acquire seabed mapping data that can be input directly into INFOMAR. 3.Undertake a hydrographic survey to International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Order 1a standard. 4.Undertake biological sampling to fulfil requirements of the WFD. 5.Test new oceanographic equipment deployed on a recently constructed Lander and examine the sediment/water interface and sediment dynamics within the bay. 6.Test new spatial video mapping technology. A Kongsberg Simrad hull mounted EM3002 high resolution MBES was used for swathe acoustic acquisition. The system operates at 293 and 307 kHz with 508 soundings per ping at a maximum angular coverage of 69° per head. It has a maximum ping rate of 40 Hz. Positioning was provided by C-Nav 3050 Differential Global Navigation Satellite System (DGNSS) and these data were integrated with inertial measurement units by a Seatex Motion Reference Unit (MRU) to give real time heading, heave, pitch and roll, position and velocity of the MBES system. An EA400 hull mounted Singlebeam echo-sounder (SBES) provided further depth information along ships profile. The EA400 is a dual frequency system with both 38 kHz and 200 kHz capability. MRU data was directly fed into the SBES. A pinger source SBP operating at 3.5 kHz was used for shallow sub-surface data acquisition. A Coda Octopus DA2000 acted as the topside acquisition system. Raw data was logged in native coda format along with tiff images of each survey line. Positioning data was provided from C-Nav DNSS and MRU data was fed directly from Seatex MRU. QC was maintained by the online engineers, with reference to the digital display; with gains, filter parameters and transmit energy adjusted as required for optimal imaging. QINSy software was used to provide positioning data to the survey sensors. Sound Velocity data for input to the echosounders was acquired using a Valeport Midas SVX2 CTD instrument. C-Nav DGNSS provided the primary navigation. The C-Nav3050 is a dynamic DGNSS Precise point Positioning system providing accuracy of <0.1 metre horizontally and 0.2 metre vertically. It provides 66 channel tracking, including multi-constellation support for GPS, GLONASS and Galileo. C_Nav provides the primary navigation feed for MBES, SBES, SBP and magnetometer sensors. It also provides a reliable GPS tide solution. Seapath 200 provided the secondary navigation. Sounding data was shifted to LAT using the Vertical Offshore Reference Frame (VORF) model provided by the UKHO. The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to IHO Order 1 Multibeam standards. Download all of our data and reports from https://jetstream.gsi.ie/iwdds/map.jsp
