AbstractThe Kaliakra’90 cruise was the first reconnaissance study of the Bulgarian national program for mapping the Bulgarian Black Sea shelf in a scale of 1:100,000. It was performed by the RV “Akademic” from 06 March to 01 April, 1990. Unfortunately, the program died short after this pioneer cruise. The principal database for the survey is a set of 120 ESE - 300 WNW trending echo-sounder and shallow seismic profiles with a line spacing of 500 m. The dataset covers an area from Cape Shabla to Cape Kaliakra in water depths from 50 m to about 400 m offshore Northern Bulgaria and consists of 19 shallow seismic lines with total length of approximately 460 km. The echo-sounder investigations were made by SIMRAD - EA200 echo-sounder. Shallow seismic survey was carried out by “boomer” as sound source and 2 m length streamer with a group of 10 couples of hydrophones connected in parallel. The reflected signals were recorded on a wet-paper graphic recorder “Inei-P” within a frequency range of 480 Hz to 2,100 Hz with a central frequency of about 1,200 Hz. The recorded length was 0.4 sec with penetration of up to 0.250 sec (average 0.15 sec) bellow seabed. The vertical resolution of the boomer sections approximates 0.8-1.0 m and the quality of data is very good. Position fixing was undertaken by GPS – NAVSTAR navigation system, with an accuracy of near 0.01 nautical mile (about 20 m). Boomer sections are available as scanned images.
