| Abstract | The Marine Institute of Ireland were contracted by to perform a variety of survey tasks for the ‘Wave Energy Connection Project’ off Blacksod Bay and Annagh Head on the west coast of Ireland. Tonn Energy and ESB International are working in the area under the umbrella of Sustainable Energy Ireland who provides various services to ensure and facilitate operations for renewable energy in the area. The primary purpose of the survey is to identify seabed topography together with northern and southern routes information to enable connectivity between land and offshore. The routes are to be designed from Annagh Head and Blacksod Bay. The survey is to be acquired on a priority basis. Priority 1: Seabed sampling along the cable route from Annagh Head to offshore is the main priority and is to be acquired during daylight operations only. Priority 2: Acquisition of MBES and SBP data in an area approximately 20 x 15 km shared between the requirements of ESB International and Tonn Energy. This is to be acquired during night time operations and on the completion of geotechnical work. Priority 3: The third requirement is to carry out an investigation survey into Blacksod Bay by use of MBES, SSS and SBP to allow initial route planning procedures for Tonn Energy. This is to be included in the programme pending on survey time constraints and progress of priority 1 and 2. Priority 4: The final priority is to continue MBES and SBP acquisition in deeper water for Tonn Energy. This is to be included in the programme pending on survey time constraints and progress of priority 1, 2 and 3. Regular sound velocity profiles are required to ensure quality of MBES acquisition and 2 tide gauges are to be placed on the seabed at strategically place locations to provide observed tidal data in the area for the survey period. A Kongsberg Simrad EM3002 multibeam system was used for acquisition of hydrographic data, with a Kongsberg Simrad EA400 singlebeam providing additional depth data. Navigation information was provided using Seapath Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), Fugro HP DGPS signal and Quinsy software. Hydrographic data was processed using CARIS HIPS and SIPS software package. Water depths were initially reduced to chart datum (Lowest Astronomical Tide-LAT) using Polpred High Resolution Continental Shelf Model (CS20). As soon as tide data from onshore and offshore tide gauges is available the predicted tides are substituted. The dataset was reprocessed in 2013 to utilise the UKHO VORF (Vertical Offshore Reference Frame) sea surface model. This model allows the use of ‘GPS tides’ and the GSI has gridded this model to a 1km resolution around Ireland to 15km offshore for reducing all soundings to Lowest Astronomical Tide - LAT (VORF). The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to IHO Special Order, Order 1 and 2 Multibeam standards.
