| Abstract | All depths are reduced to Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT). The survey was carried out in 2006 using aircraft using Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology. This is part of the ongoing INFOMAR Project, Ireland’s national marine mapping programme. The survey was carried out by Tenix LADS Corporation Pty. Ltd using the LADS Mk II Lidar system, and processed using the LADS Mk II Ground System. Sensors onboard the airplane measure the difference between laser returns from the sea surface and seabed, allowing the water depth to be calculated. Lasers used are eye-safe. Water depths from 0 to 70 metres can be surveyed by LIDAR but typically depths of around 15 metres are achieved in Irish coastal waters. Real-time support was provided by the Geological Survey of Ireland, Department of Marine, Communications and Natural Resources who supplied observed tides throughout the survey period from the existing tide gauge at Castletownbere Harbour and Galway Harbour, and GSI installed gauges at Rinville in Galway Bay, Parkmore in Kinvarra Bay and Bantry Harbour in Bantry Bay. In addition GSI staff provided support in the positioning of control points and heighting of benchmarks at all tide gauge locations.Fugro OmniStar Wide Area Differential GPS was used with a continually updated virtual reference position. One local GPS base station was used to provide Kinematic GPS positions. This base station was located on a control point positioned on the roof of the Quality Hotel, Killarney. Temporary control points were also established on the tarmac at Kerry Airport. These points were used to conduct static position checks of all positioning systems. Accuracy of Position. Based on the results of the position checks it is considered that IHO Order-1 position accuracy was achieved. The survey depth accuracy has been assessed theoretically and conforms to IHO Order-1.Please reference the INFOMAR projects when the data is used in publications & presentations.
