| Abstract | In October 2000, a baseline environmental survey was conducted within Anadarko’s lease area Blocks II B and II C in the eastern Black Sea off the coast of the Republic of Georgia. The survey area extended in an east-west direction from the Georgia shoreline to about 30 nmi offshore and in a north-south direction from the southern border with Turkey north to the force major line bordering the contested area offshore of the Abkhazia region. The primary purpose of the survey was to develop baseline environmental information to support an Environmental Impact Assessment for a planned exploratory drilling program. In compliance with the contract between the Continental Shelf Associates, Inc. and scientific research firm Gamma the latter was asked to carry out investigation of bottom sediments and sea water quality. The works were performed in association with Batumi institute of Marine Environment and Fisheries (MEFRI). The project provided collection of following information: data of hydrographic profiles of the water column, chemical and biological analyses of water samples, and chemical and biological analyses of sediment samples. The studies were implemented on the scientific vessel “PIRI REIS”, of Izmir University (Turkey). Part of samples was analyzed on the board; collected sediment and water samples was packaged and labeled for transportation to laboratory. The whole task including field works (2 weeks), laboratory activities and presentation took 2 months. Following researches are carried out: determination of salinity, suspended solids, nutrients, heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons in sea water; hydrographical profile of water column, grain size composition of bottom sediments, determination heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons in sediments. Receiving data are treated by ArcGIS program and the maps of distribution of chemical elements are created. | |||||||||
