AbstractTenix LADS were awarded a tender to carry out a bathymetric LiDAR survey by Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) as part of the Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s Marine Resource (INFOMAR) project in 2008. Tenix LADS then commissioned Blom Aerofilms to capture the Bathymetric and topographic LiDAR data, along with aerial imagery in 3 of the project areas that had been awarded. The 3 areas awarded to Blom Aerofilms was a number of shallow almost land-locked bays making up the larger project areas. The requirement of the survey was to collect bathymetric data from the coastline to a minimum depth of 10 meters which meets IHO Order 1 standards for position and depth. Digital imagery and seabed reflectivity data were also required. Depths were to be reported relative to Malin Head datum. A second data set relative to Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT) was also to be provided for charting purposes. The aerial acquisition of the laser data used the HawkEye Mk II airborne Bathymetric LiDAR System. In addition to the airborne acquisition, a number of ground surveys for Quality Control were carried out. The data was initially collected on the ETRF89 (WGS84) datum and processed on ellipsoid heights. The ellipsoid heights were transformed to an orthometric datum via the OSGM02 geoid model and various offsets. The primary vertical datum for the project was Malin Head with a secondary data set produced relative to LAT (Lowest Astronomical Tide) datum. Data was collected on the GRS80 ellipsoid, and transformed using the OSGM02 geoid model. Corrections were then made for the differences between the MSL to Malin Head datum at each survey site. As part of a second additional QC check, 6 bathymetric surveys were carried out; 2 in each bay, to provide a check against the LiDAR data for the accuracy of the vertical coordinate in the sea areas. The sea control surveys were carried out by Aquafact. Please reference the INFOMAR projects when the data is used in publications & presentations. Visit http://www.infomar.ie for more information.
