| Abstract | This area was surveyed as part of the ongoing Infomar project (formerly Irish National Seabed Survey), a joint seabed mapping project between the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute. The objective of this survey leg was to provide the INFOMAR project with Swathe Bathymetry, Single Beam Echo Sounder, Sub-Bottom Profiler, Magnetometer, ADCP, CTD and SVP profiles data for Bantry and Dunmanus Bays, two sites south of Roches Point and an area off to coast of Waterford. Also observed under the provisions of the Scope of Work were regular daily weather reports, and cetacean and fishing activity observations. Soft start procedures were performed during the survey of Dunmanus and Bantry Bays as required by the IWDG regulation. The scientific aims of the survey were to (i) undertake a hydrographic survey to International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Order 1a standard. The primary system for gathering the bathymetric data was the Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 multibeam echosounder, hull mounted on the vessel and operating at a frequency of 93khz to 95 kHz. Primary positioning was the Fugro Starfix- At the start VBS 3000 Spot GPS system (the HP (High Precision) GPS positioning system having a failed antenna and therefore being out of operation) and thereafter was from the HP GPS positioning system, once it had been reinstalled on 18th September with a replacement SPM unit and antenna. It was not possible to connect the HP position output to the EM1002 transceiver unit (primary position in use was Seapath). Fugro Starfix navigation suite used both Seapath and Fugro VBS Spot (6th – 18th Sept) and then the HP GPS (18th Sept – 16th Oct) systems for data logging and quality control purposes. On the last day of survey, Fugro HP was connected to EM1002 but Seapath positioning was still the primary system for EM1002. Tidal data was corrected for atmospheric pressure using atmospheric pressure recorded on the vessel and reduced to LAT using the corrections obtained from Proudman Oceanographic Institutes ‘Polpred’ tidal prediction software using continental shelf model C53-30HC. The multi beam echo sounder data were processed utilising CARIS HIPS 6.1 multibeam processing software. The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to IHO_S44 Order 1 multibeam standards.
