AbstractThis area was surveyed as part of the ongoing Infomar project (formerly Irish National Seabed Survey), a joint seabed mapping project between the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute. The scientific aims of the survey were to (i) undertake a hydrographic survey to International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) Order 1a standard, (ii) acquire sub bottom profiler and magnetometer data to investigate the sub seabed geology, and (iii) undertake marine mammal observations while adhering to National Parks and Wildlife guideline procedures for operation of acoustic equipment. The primary system for gathering the bathymetric data is the Kongsberg Simrad EM3002 multibeam echosounder, hull mounted on the vessel and operating at a frequency of 293 kHz to 307 kHz. Navigation information was provided using Seapath Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), Fugro HP DGPS signal and Quinsy software. Hydrographic data was processed using CARIS HIPS and SIPS 6.1 software package. Water depths were initially reduced to chart datum (Lowest Astronomical Tide-LAT) using Polpred High Resolution Continental Shelf Model (CS20). Full tidal corrections were applied at a later stage once onshore tide gauge data was made available.
