AbstractThis area was surveyed as part of the Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) now called the Infomar project, a joint seabed mapping project between the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Marine Institute. The objective of the survey during this leg was to provide the INFOMAR project with Swathe Bathymetry, Single Beam Echo Sounder, Sub-Bottom Profiling, Magnetometer, Gravity, ADCP, CTD and SVP profiles and ground truthing data for the survey area offshore the Dingle peninsula within Zone 2. Also observed under the provisions of the Scope of Work were regular daily weather reports, and cetacean and fishing activity observations. The Celtic Explorer does not routinely keep a fishing vessel log and therefore no data is presented in this report. No MMO was present during this leg so no Cetacean sighting logs will be included. The R.V. Celtic Explorer was equipped with a Kongsberg Simrad EM1002 multibeam echosounder, hull mounted on the vessel and operating at a frequency of 95khz to an angular coverage of 75° on both port and starboard sides of the transducer. The primary positioning for this survey was the Fugro Starfix-HP (High Precision) GPS positioning system. The HP position output is delivered simultaneously to the EM1002 transceiver unit (as primary position) and to the Fugro Starfix navigation suite for data logging and quality control purposes. The multi beam echo sounder data were processed utilising CARIS HIPS and SIPS 6.1 multibeam processing software. Each survey line was tidally corrected using predicted tides derived from Polpred software from the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory using continental shelf model C53-30HC. The dataset was reprocessed in 2013 to utilise the UKHO VORF (Vertical Offshore Reference Frame) sea surface model. This model allows the use of ‘GPS tides’ and the GSI has gridded this model to a 1km resolution around Ireland to 15km offshore for reducing all soundings to Lowest Astronomical Tide - LAT (VORF). The Hydrographic component of this survey has been conducted to IHO Special Order, Order 1 and 2 Multibeam standards.
